This is the first part of two courses in the advanced study of American Sign Language. This course focuses on the natural acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) as a conversational language, particularly on development of everyday communication practices as demonstrated by American Deaf people. Topics include expanded student discourse, advanced ASL structure and vocabulary, role-shifting variations, formal storytelling, text analysis, formal/informal presentations. and using ASL in more abstract contexts. Emphasis is placed on narrative, receptive, and expressive skill development. Deaf culture will be incorporated into class activities as appropriate for this level.
Prerequisite: SNLN 254.
