Considers sociolinguistic issues in cross-cultural communication in oral, written and digital communication. Special attention is paid to linguistic politeness, common pitfalls in the performance of speech acts such as agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting, complimenting, and conversational organization, turn-taking, and patterns of negotiation. Prerequisite: ENG 220.
